Are U.S. schools preparing students to become competent world citizens able to communicate in more than one language? To answer this question, the Center for Applied Linguistics conducted a national survey of foreign language instruction in elementary and secondary schools. The publication, Foreign Language Teaching in U.S. Schools: Results of a National Survey, provides detailed information on current patterns and shifts over time in five key areas: amount of foreign language instruction in schools, languages and types of programs offered, foreign language curriculum, teacher certification and professional development, and effects of education reform on language instruction.
